Styles Of Swing |

Balboa- |
This
swing dance gets its
name from Balbo pavilion on the Balbo
Peninsula where this dance became popular during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
This dance is still widely popular today among swing dancers and
performed by dancers in various swing dancing competitions. This dance
was choreographed with small spaces and crowded dance floors in mind
that’s why this dance incorporates shuffling footwork with the dance
partners remaining in a close embrace. |

East Coast Swing- |
Is an evolved version of
the Lindy Hop that came about in the 40’s.
Though the name suggests its regional specific the east coast swing
dance style is practised all over the globe and proves to be very
popular across the UK and America. Much like the majority of swing
dances east coast swing is a social dance that is performed with a
partner. This dance mostly uses a six count with three rhythm
structures; Single, double and triple. |
|
West Coast Swing- |
Is another dance that was
developed from the Lindy Hop. West Coast
Swing is not too dissimilar from East Coast Swing with both being a
partnered swing dance, evolved from Lindy Hop with similar names. West
Coast swing has been known by many different names since it rose in
popularity. In the 50’s this swing dance was referred to as California
swing and western swing, it wasn’t until the 60’s that dancers settled
on the name West Coast swing but is still occasional referred to a
Hollywood swing due to in smooth style and numerous appearances in
Hollywood movies. West Coast Swing popularity is still high to this day, with many taking part in West Coast Swing dance classes and competitions. The steady popularity comes from the fact the dance evolves with the music of the times. This dance can and has been danced to Rock, pop, Soul, R&B and blues to name a few. |

Jive- |
Is one of the first swing
dance styles to come out of Europe. Once
American swing dances made their way to Europe they quickly evolved
into something new. Jive is one of the fastest swing dances performed
at a high tempo. Jives dance pattern is similar to east coast swing
with a focus on circular motion with lots of turns and spins opposed to
west coast swing which is danced in slots. Because of the high tempo
and the exaggerated appearance of the dance movements compared to other
swing dances makes it very appealing to competition judges and
audiences alike. The style of jive used in dancing competitions can be
referred to as ballroom jive. |
